Jurassic excavation seminar set to explore another world

A free-to-attend online ‘prestige’ seminar takes place next week and it promises to give SOE members, colleagues and friends a fascinating insight into oceanography and the science behind the world of Jurassic excavation and exploration.

The annual event is being hosted by EMSTA, which promotes interest in Engineering, Maths, Science and Technology and is this year turning its attention to the evolution of excavation, marine fossils and palaeontological investigation.

Entitled “Incredible stories from Deep Time: Exceptional Finds from the Late Jurassic Era”, the seminar carries CPD points for attendees and should prove to be of particular interest to SOE members and colleagues who have Plant and Environmental specialist interests. 

Dr Steve Etches MBE – whose ‘Etches Collection’ is considered to be the finest single collection of Late Jurassic age fossils ever assembled in Britain – will be taking seminar attendees on a journey through some of an extraordinary collection of 2,500 fossils from the Kimmeridge Clay. Many of the species he will highlight are new to science and are of great palaeontological importance.

Dr Etches will be joined by his colleague and fellow fossil hunter Richard Edwards who will walk attendees along the Jurassic coast east and west of Kimmeridge Bay and explain what, when and how the fossils came to be so abundant at there – and the significance of the many species that they have discovered there.

Professor John Marshall of the National Oceanographic centre of Southampton University will also be on hand to discuss the current research and projects that his team are working on with relation to The Etches Collection, to explain the science behind it all.

A recording of the event will be available to anyone who registers but attending in person is highly recommended as a chaired discussion will give the audience the chance to put forward their questions to the speakers and debate some of the issues raised.

The evening seminar will be the twenty-third annual prestige seminar organised by EMSTA CIC as a joint event with the Satcoms Innovation Group and various professional engineering and science institutions.
Access to the seminar is free, but advance registration is required.
