MSOE membership gives you voting rights in annual SOE elections and eligibility to stand for election to our SOE Trustee Board or your relevant Professional Sector Council.
What are the entry requirements?
All applications for MSOE are judged against the membership criteria set by SOE’s Membership and Professional Standards Committee and must show that you have sufficient skills and experience.
There are two routes to entry:
Qualification route:
You will need to provide a CV demonstrating qualification equivalent or higher to a Level 3 on the UK Qualification Framework, in a relevant engineering subject. Copies of certificates and transcripts should be provided if you want to pursue Professional Registration with Engineering Council or Society for the Environment.
Industry Professional route:
If you do not have a Level 3 qualification, you can be considered for membership if you have ‘on the job’ experience. You can demonstrate this with a CV that shows at least five years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of two years of in a senior or leadership role.

What fees will I pay?
The annual MSOE fee is currently £180.72, which is pro-rated depending on when you join during the year, and renews every January. There is also a one-off non-refundable application fee of £44.92. This fee increases for offline applications.
If you are employed by one of our Corporate Partners, and they have agreed to pay for your membership and application fee or a discounted rate, then the process will pick up on this when you tell us your employer.

The SOE offers a range of membership grades, including Student, Apprentice, Graduate, Associate, Member and Fellow. Each is designed to reflect different career stages and levels of experience, helping you join at the right point and progress over time.

- How does SOE support professional development and CPD?
Members have access to the SOE CPD Hub, technical articles, member publications, events, webinars and conferences. These resources are designed to support lifelong learning, help members maintain professional standards, and keep skills up to date.
- Can SOE membership support Professional Registration?
Yes. The SOE is licensed by the Engineering Council to support Professional Registration, including EngTech, IEng and CEng, as well as by Society for the Environment to award CEnv and REnvP. Members receive guidance, mentoring and resources to help them prepare for and progress through the registration process.
- How do I get involved once I join?
Members can engage with their relevant Professional Sector, their local regional centre, attend events or take advantage of volunteering opportunities, join our Mentoring Programme and contribute to publications or working groups. Getting involved helps members expand their network, share knowledge and actively support the profession.
