What We Do

About the SOE

As one of the UK’s top ten Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs), SOE supports individuals and organisations through membership, Professional Registration with the Engineering Council and Society for the Environment, technical guidance, mentorship, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and more.

Professional Registration

As a PEIwe are licensed by the Engineering Council to register eligible members for Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer, and Chartered Engineer, and by Society for the Environment to award Chartered Environmentalist and Registered Environmental Practitioner.

BES Professional Sector

Our Bureau of Engineer Surveyors (BES) professional sector supports those who work as engineer surveyors to provide knowledge and professional support to the insurance and inspection industry.  

We welcome engineers from large insurance firms to small independent inspection companies, those with specialised consultancy skills, and everyone in-between.

The Environmental Professional Sector is committed to supporting those working in environmental engineering and advancing related science and technologies. It provides a forum for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the exchange of best practices among engineers committed to reducing the impact of human activity on the global environment. 

IPlantE Professional Sector
IPlantE Professional Sector

The IPlantE Professional Sector represents professionals involved in the maintenance and operation of both fixed and mobile plant assets. IPlantE champions high standards in maintenance, operations, and safety, acting as a representative voice for plant engineers across industries.  

IRTE Professional Sector
IRTE Professional Sector

The Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE) Professional Sector supports HGV and PSV professionals throughout  their careers, and encourages high standards in maintenance of a sector crucial to employment and public safety. The IRTE is also the pioneering force behind the irtec and IRTE Workshop Accreditation schemes, and a partner in the MPRS scheme.

Our Operations Professional Sector supports operations engineers who work to optimise the efficiency, safety and sustainability of industrial processes and infrastructure, whether employed in manufacturing, production, utilities, construction, transport or defence. They are responsible for maintaining performance and meeting the standards required by legislation.
