Our Associate class of membership contributes to SOE’s commitment to making engineering knowledge available to all. AMSOE is suitable for those who are involved in, and work around engineering but are not themselves qualified or working as an engineer. This includes journalists, technical sales and marketing professionals, operational managers etc.
AMSOE is also a stepping stone to MSOE, for those who do not yet have the required skills or qualifications but are working towards them.

What are the entry requirements?
All applications for AMSOE are judged against the membership criteria set by SOE’s Membership and Professional Standards Committee and must show that you have sufficient skills and experience.
There are generally two routes to entry:
Qualification route:
You will need to provide a CV which evidences a qualification equivalent or higher to a Level 3 on the UK Qualification Framework, in a relevant engineering subject. Copies of certificates and transcripts should be provided if you want to pursue Professional Registration with Engineering Council or Society for the Environment.
Industry Professional route:
If you do not have a Level 3 qualification, you can be considered for membership if you have ‘on the job’ experience. This must take the form of a CV and show at least five years of relevant work experience, including a minimum of two years of in a senior or leadership role.

What fees will I pay?
The annual AMSOE fee is currently £162.34, which is pro-rated depending on when you join during the year, and then renews every January. There is also a one-off non-refundable application fee of £44.92. This fee increases for offline applications.
If you are employed by one of our Corporate Partners, and they have agreed to pay for your membership and application fee, then the process will pick up on this when you advise us of your employer.

- How does SOE support professional development and CPD?
Members have access to the SOE CPD Hub, technical articles, member publications, events, webinars and conferences. These resources are designed to support lifelong learning, help members maintain professional standards, and keep skills up to date.
- Can SOE membership support Professional Registration?
Yes. The SOE is licensed by the Engineering Council to support Professional Registration, including EngTech, IEng and CEng, as well as by Society for the Environment to award CEnv and REnvP. Members receive guidance, mentoring and resources to help them prepare for and progress through the registration process.
- How do I get involved once I join?
Members can engage with their relevant Professional Sector, their local regional centre, attend events or take advantage of volunteering opportunities, join our Mentoring Programme and contribute to publications or working groups. Getting involved helps members expand their network, share knowledge and actively support the profession.
