What is the SOE Benevolent Fund?
The SOE Benevolent Fund exists to provide financial support to our members, former members, or their dependents, who have fallen on hard times.
A benevolent fund is a registered charity or dedicated financial resource established to provide financial assistance, grants, and support to individuals facing hardship, such as illness, unemployment, or bereavement.
The Fund is an independent charity, Company No. 260934.

The Fund’s History
Inspired by its motto, “If we know, we can help,” our Benevolent Fund has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing assistance to members in need since 1970.
With a rich history spanning over five decades, the Benevolent Fund stands as a testament to the power of compassion and solidarity within the engineering community.
Originally the IPlantE Benevolent Fund, it was established by George Mitchell and registered as an independent charity on 1 January 1970 with an initial £1,000 contribution from the Institution of Plant Engineers (IPlantE). The Fund thrived throughout the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, under long-serving Chairman Dick Wyatt, distributing assistance nationwide.
Today, the fund continues its charitable mission, supporting members and former members of each of our sectors.
