Laura Hadzik, a partner and head of the commercial road transport department at JMW Solicitors, visited the centre on the 27th of June. During this visit Laura gave an insightful presentation on HGV and PCV operator compliance, highlighting failings and the current regulatory procedures enforced by the Traffic Commissioners.

Laura began by introducing herself and outlining her role as a specialist transport solicitor. She discussed how operators can face significant issues if they fail to adhere to the required legislation and procedures.

The presentation commenced with an overview of periods of grace, the roles and responsibilities of transport managers, and the importance of risk management. Laura then covered the issue of clandestine entrants, explaining the repercussions of poor security measures or inadequate policies on both drivers and operators.

Next, Laura delved into the DVSA investigation procedures. She explained how ‘S’ endorsed prohibitions or other catalysts can lead to full or desk-based remote investigations by the DVSA. She also detailed the actions operators must take when requested for information and data by the agency.

Laura then outlined the steps involved if an investigation results in disciplinary action or a public inquiry. She provided the 33 members and guests present with an understanding of the procedures for an operator’s appearance before the Traffic Commissioners.

The final part of the presentation focused on 'Women in Transport,' an organisation dedicated to promoting women within the transport industry. Laura highlighted the organisation’s events, mentoring programmes, advice, and support for women currently working in or aspiring to join the industry.

The evening concluded with a lively Question-and-Answer session. IRTE Northern Centre Committee Member and Past Chairman Sam Archer thanked Laura on behalf of the members and guests for her informative presentation.

This event not only provided valuable insights into critical regulatory topics but also emphasised the importance of supporting diversity within the transport industry.
