A Bradford-based electric gate company has been fined after a six-year-old boy was killed playing with friends on a sliding gate.

The company that had installed the gate, Bradfabs Ltd. of Planetrees Road, Laisterdyke, Bradford, pleaded guilty at Leeds Crown Court to breaching Section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and was fined £30,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £12,411.46.

When the boy and his friends were playing on the gate of an underground car park on Leylands Road, Leeds, pushing it open and closed, but the gate had no endstop fitted, and fell on the child.

A Health and Safety Executive Investigation (HSE) found the company that had manufactured and installed the electric gate failed to install an end stop. Despite the gate being involved in commissioning and maintenance over the six years since installation, the fault was not identified or rectified.
