Description

We’re one of the UK’s largest train operating companies and our franchise began on 1 April 2016, running for 9 years. Northern is owned by Arriva Group (backed by Deutsche Bahn).

Northern plays a vital role in the north of England by connecting tens of thousands of people, to work, leisure and education. Our aim is to connect people to opportunities by providing a reliable and friendly train service. We have made significant progress since we started but there is much more that we want to achieve and you can be a part of it.

SCHEME DELIVERY OUTLINE

You will be employed by Northern as an Apprentice for three years, on a Fixed Term Contract. However, your Apprenticeship training/assessment will be managed by NTAR (National Training Academy for Rail) in partnership with an approved training provider.

The apprentice scheme will last 3 years, culminating in a Level 3 Qualification in Traction and Rolling Stock.

Year One

You will spend the majority of your first year learning from an approved training partner, where accommodation will be provided if required. During this time you will complete a Level 2 qualification in Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) along with some Level 3 learning about the railway and rail engineering. You will also undertake work at NTAR and your home depot to begin immersing yourself in your career.

Year Two

You will continue your apprenticeship at your home depot by gaining knowledge and working towards your Level 3 qualification by spending time at NTAR and then reinforcing this underpinning knowledge with hands on experience working at your depot.

Year Three

Your final year will be spent putting the theory and knowledge you have learnt so far into practice by carrying out work on various identified systems both at NTAR and at the depot. Towards the end of the year you will be helped to prepare for your final end point assessment and once complete you will be passed out as a rail compliant rolling stock technician.

WHAT ELSE WILL I LEARN?

As well as gaining this great practical experience in engineering, you will learn key skills such as working safely, communication and team work.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING ON PLACEMENT?

Within Northern Engineering, you will complete a number of placements in different departments and during this time, you'll learn all about engineering and other key elements of the business. As you move around, you'll gain lots of hands on, practical experience, get the chance to speak to different people and discover how the company works and the many different career paths available to you as well as a progression of your academic qualifications.
